Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about water testing on the South Shore — no scare tactics, no filter sales pitch.

Getting Started

Should I test if I am on town water?

Many town-water homeowners simply want a clearer picture of what is coming out of their own tap, especially in older homes or when considering a filter. Your town tests the water system; we help you understand your water at the tap.

About Testing

Should I test if I already have a filter?

Yes — testing can help confirm whether your current filter actually matches the issue you are trying to solve. A lot of people have a filter but have never confirmed it addresses their specific water.

Can I just buy a kit online?

You can, and some homeowners should. What we provide is convenience, correct test selection, sample coordination, certified lab handling, and a plain-English explanation. The real value is avoiding confusion and making sure you are testing for the right things.

Is testing necessary every year?

It depends on your water source, household, results, local requirements, and concerns. Private well owners often have a stronger need for recurring testing; town-water homeowners may simply want a baseline or occasional retest. We help you set a practical schedule after your first result.

What is PFAS, and should I test for it?

PFAS are a group of long-lasting chemicals that Massachusetts regulates in drinking water under its PFAS6 standard. PFAS testing is specialized and more expensive than a basic panel. We help you decide whether it makes sense for your situation and explain the result against the state reference point.

Understanding Results

Do you guarantee my water is safe?

No. Test results only reflect the contaminants tested at the time the sample was collected. We help interpret results and suggest next steps, but we do not make blanket safety guarantees.

What happens if something shows up in my results?

We explain what the result means, what it does not mean, and what the next step may be — whether that is retesting, maintenance, treatment, or a referral to a qualified professional. You decide what to do next.

Process & Pricing

Do you install water filters?

Not directly unless properly licensed and permitted. If testing suggests treatment may be needed, we can refer homeowners to qualified, licensed local partners who evaluate the situation and provide their own recommendations.

How much does a water check cost?

Service packages start at $199 for a Tap Water Check, with well and PFAS packages priced higher because of the lab panels involved. Final pricing depends on the test panel selected, and we always confirm the total before collecting any samples.

What areas do you serve?

We serve homeowners across the South Shore of Massachusetts, including Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, Marshfield, Duxbury, Hanover, Norwell, Rockland, Weymouth, Braintree, Plymouth, Kingston, Pembroke, and surrounding towns.

How does the process work?

Four simple steps: (1) tell us about your home and water source, (2) we match you with the right test, (3) we coordinate sample collection and certified lab analysis, and (4) you get a plain-English summary with clear next steps.

Trust & Approach

Are you a laboratory?

No. South Shore Water Testing coordinates testing through qualified lab partners. Our role is to help homeowners choose the right test, coordinate the process, and understand the results in plain English.

Are you going to try to sell me a filtration system?

No. Testing comes first. If your results do not show a need for treatment, we will say so. If the results suggest treatment may help, we explain the options and can refer you to qualified local partners — there is no pressure to buy anything.

How do I know the results are reliable?

The analysis is handled through qualified lab partners — we are not doing the lab work ourselves. Our role is coordination, careful sample handling, clear communication, and a plain-English explanation of the lab's report.

Still have a question?

Tell us about your home and we'll point you to the right test — or just answer your question. No pressure.

Simple testing. Clear results. Local guidance.
